Need of Biogas Desulphurization

The hydrogen sulphide (H2S) content in raw biogas depends both on organic substrate or waste, and previous production process (sugar refineries, distilleries, breweries). The H2S value typically ranges from 0.05 to 5.0% (500-50,000 ppm). During combustion, the H2S is oxidised to corrosive oxides of sulphur. Under the presence of condensate, sulphuric acid (H2SO4) is formed. The result is the heavy corrosion of gas-engine and auxiliary equipment. The lifetime of gas-engines is shortened by several years under that process!

As a consequence of the frequent exchange of engine oils, technical inspections, failures and subsequent repairs, there is a significant reduction of the investor’s profit. That is also the reason why leading manufacturers of gas engines require, as a condition for the full engine warranty, that the value of H2S in combusted biogas does not exceed 250 ppm. When necessary, the H2S content can be decreased to markedly lower values by BioGasclean technology.
